From mega-malls to outdoor markets, Charlotte provides a stylish range of shopping. Destination malls include Concord Mills with 200 retailers, outlets and eateries; SouthPark Mall, with Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co., and Lucky Brand Dungarees; the outdoor Phillips Place, with luxury enclaves including Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs; and Carolina Place, in the suburb of Pineville, anchored by Belk, Dillard’s, Hecht’s, JCPenney and Sears. Carolina Place also has an outer corridor of “furniture row” retailers from Bassett to La-Z-Boy. Charlotte’s significant gallery scene is notable, too: The North Davidson District (NoDa) is home to funky shops and restaurants. Historic South End, a warehouse district, is a trolley stop south of Center City Charlotte, where Atherton Mill is a one-time textile mill transformed into specialty shops. Boutiques abound in Plaza-Midwood, Myers Park and Dilworth neighborhoods. Twin Oaks Shopping Center has upscale boutiques. Suburban shopping centers Stonecrest and Birkdale Village are big on hip clothing for the entire family.
Historic Waxhaw, Pineville and the Metrolina Expo are big draws for antiques and home furnishings. In fact, with more than 60 percent of all furniture manufactured in the nation is made in North Carolina, High Point, the “Furniture Capital of the World,” Hickory and Thomasville, are within a two-hour drive from Charlotte. On the merchandising fast track, some 90 percent of NASCAR NEXTEL teams are headquartered within 50 miles of Charlotte, and several boast gift shops and retail stores.
